Sacred Candles

Whenever possible I light a candle in remembrance of my friends and loved ones who have passed.

It reminds me of a story of my dad, when he was in the hospital coming to the end of his life I stopped to light a candle. I stopped at the Blue Army Shrine to light a candle, and that evening it was so windy I thought for sure my candle would not stay lit. But I did it anyway. The next day I stopped to relight the candle because of the wind, but I found it still burning for my dad. I truly believe these are sacred candles and God watches over our intentions.

Take the time
and LIGHT a candle for someone you Love

The Silent Guardian

Saint Joseph, known as the foster father of Jesus and the spouse of the Virgin Mary, is a figure of significance in the Christian faith. Often referred to as the "silent guardian," Joseph's life and actions speak volumes, even though he is notably silent in the Scriptures. His steadfast faith, humility, and unwavering dedication to his family make him a powerful example for believers.

Saint Joseph’s role as the protector of the Holy Family is central to his legacy. When the angel appeared to him in a dream, instructing him to take Mary as his wife, Joseph's obedience was immediate. He did not question or hesitate, embodying a deep trust in God’s plan. His protective nature is further demonstrated when he fled to Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus to escape King Herod’s decree. Throughout his life, Joseph ensured the safety and well-being of his family, providing a secure and loving environment for Jesus to grow up in.

One of the most striking aspects of Saint Joseph is his silence. The Gospels do not record any words spoken by Joseph, yet his actions speak profoundly. His life is a testament to the power of silent obedience and contemplative faith. Especially in a world full of noise and distraction, Joseph’s quiet strength and unwavering faithfulness offer a powerful lesson in humility and trust in God’s providence.

Saint Joseph is also revered as the patron of a happy death, having died in the presence of Jesus and Mary. This association offers comfort and hope for us the faithful, reminding us of the peace that comes from a life of faithfulness and devotion. Invoking Saint Joseph's intercession, we can seek Saint Joseph's guidance and support in our final moments, aspiring to a death as serene and surrounded by love as his.

Saint Joseph's life is an example of faith in action. His silent strength, unwavering obedience, and humble dedication to his family and work provide a timeless model for Christians. By reflecting on his life and seeking his intercession, we can find inspiration and guidance in our own spiritual journeys.

Meditative Walking

I call it meditative walking. With my eyes I am looking at the beautiful landscape. A chance to remove myself from worldly thinking.

Sometimes when I am here at Saint Joseph's Shrine there is no one else around. Today there was a retreat going on, and it was nice to see a lot of young people growing in their faith. Visiting a shrine can be a communal experience, bringing together people of shared beliefs. This sense of community can strengthen one’s faith and provide support and encouragement from fellow believers.

Oratory of Saint Joseph

Making a pilgrimage to a shrine can be a journey of spiritual significance. The act of travel itself, with its challenges and moments of introspection, can be a metaphor for the spiritual journey, leading to personal growth and deeper faith.

On one of my visits to the shrine I discovered this new building that was added to the grounds. While I was sitting and meditating on this room, I started to notice the pictures on the shrine wall. This wall depicts five stages of Saint Joseph's life with Jesus and Mary.

The atmosphere and sacredness of a shrine can facilitate moments of personal transformation and conversion. Many people report experiencing profound moments of clarity, inspiration, or calling when visiting a shrine.
